Kubota Corp. has developed a new type of ductile iron water pipe that it says will remain corrosion-free even if it is used for 100 years.
Coating the surface of a ductile iron pipe with a mixed metal of zinc, tin and magnesium, the company succeeded in dramatically improving its anticorrosion property. Iron pipes used to be covered with polyethylene tubes at construction sites to prevent corrosion. The legal durable years for iron pipes are 40 years. Field tests involving spraying salt water show the new pipe would effectively resist corrosion for 100 years in 95% of national land, excluding mountainous areas, when it is laid underground, Kubota says. The company reshaped joints of the new type of pipe, resulting in less cost and power required to lay it, and at the same time enabling installation work to be done even in narrow ditches (photo). The pipe, if put to practical use, would reduce civil engineering costs by an estimated 20% as it is not necessary to dig large holes to lay it, according to Kubota.
