Kippo News from Wednesday, Jul 21, 2010

The Keihanna Research Laboratories of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in the Kansai Science City (Seika Town, Kyoto Prefecture) announced that it has succeeded for the first time in the world in the development of a 3D projection device, by which people can see 3D images on a flat table without using special glasses. Since the whole mechanism is installed under the table, people can spread materials on the table, watching 3D images, during a meeting.

Under the display of the table, a transparent conical screen is imbedded, around which 96 small projectors are installed. Images of an object to be displayed in stereoscopic 3D are photographed from multiple directions and displayed on the screen using the projectors. The structure of the screen is designed so that left and right eyes can see different images, which enables viewers to see a stereoscopic 3D image. At present, the device can display a stereoscopic image with the height of up to 5 cm for viewers within the range of 120 degrees. Keihanna Research Laboratories plans to develop a device that enables people to view images from any direction, and that displays higher quality and larger images.
