The Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI-KANSAI), a regional branch organization of Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, has created “Destination KANSAI” (in English and Japanese; see photo), a booklet introducing attractive tourist spots in the Kansai region from the viewpoints of non-Japanese residents. METI-KANSAI intends to promote the Kansai region overseas and to offer information to tourism companies in Japan to attract overseas visitors to the Kansai region.

The booklet introduces Popular Spots and Places of Interest in Kansai, selected by 167 non-Japanese Kansai residents such as students, and Attractive Sightseeing Spots in Kansai, selected by local consular officials. In addition to tourist spots that non-Japanese residents in Kansai would like to visit, the booklet introduces the charms of sightseeing in the Kansai region, together with various expectations and opinions from non-Japanese viewpoints.

According to a questionnaire survey, the three most popular places visited by non-Japanese are the Minami district in Osaka City, Osaka Castle and Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto City. The three most popular places that non-Japanese would like to visit are Hongu Hot Springs Village in Wakayama Prefecture, Omi-hachiman Suigo district in Shiga Prefecture, and Kumano Sanzan shrines and Nachi Falls in Wakayama Prefecture.

Destination Kansai can be browsed and downloaded on the METI Kansai web pages.
