NEW FOREST FIRE TRUCK DEVELOPED BY MORITA HOLDINGS
5/21/2010
Kippo News from Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Morita Holdings Corporation (Osaka), the largest manufacturer of fire trucks in Japan, has developed a new type of fire truck suitable for fighting forest fires.
In the case of forest fires, early-stage extinguishing and fire spread prevention are particularly important. Forest fires are different from urban fires in that public infrastructure is often unavailable for use. Since there are no fire hydrants in forests, it is difficult to secure water sources, which makes it difficult to extinguish forest fires in early stages. Moreover, since adequate communication infrastructure is not available in forests, it is difficult to share information, which causes difficulty in conducting proper firefighting operations.
The new type of fire truck is equipped with a tank containing 1,600 liters of water and fire-extinguishing agent. Through a compressed air foam system (CAFS), the water and fire-extinguishing agent are discharged in foam. The fire-extinguishing capability of this new truck is more than 10 times higher than that of conventional forest fire trucks.
In the back of the driver’s seat is an operation deck equipped with a satellite communication system, which enables firefighters to effectively communicate with the fire department or helicopters, regarding situations and weather conditions at fire scenes. This fire truck can serve as an information base in forests.
The company will exhibit the product in June at INTERSCHUTZ 2010 in Germany, an exhibition centering on products for firefighting and disaster prevention. The company intends to sell the product overseas, as well. Commercialization is expected in two years.
