KEPCO’S KUROYON DAM AND SHARP’S PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS RECOGNIZED AS IEEE MILESTONES
5/19/2010
Kippo News from Wednesday, May 19, 2010
The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.(KEPCO) ’s Kurobe River No. 4 Hydropower Plant (nicknamed Kuroyon Power Plant) and Sharp Corporation’s contribution to the commercialization and industrialization of photovoltaic cells have been recognized as IEEE Milestones by the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.), the world’s largest technical professional association headquartered in the U.S.
The IEEE Milestones program gives recognition to historic technical achievements in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, information and communications. To qualify for recognition, achievements must be at least 25 years old. The two newly recognized achievements make the total number of IEEE Milestones in Japan 14. The other IEEE Milestones in Japan include the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train, quartz wristwatch, and railroad automatic ticket gate.
KEPCO’s achievement recognized this time as an IEEE Milestone consists of the Kuroyon Power Plant (completion in 1963) (photo), which was constructed in a very harsh natural environment; the high-voltage, high-capacity electricity transmission system for delivering electricity from the power plant to the Kansai region, which was state-of-the-art at that time; and the company’s successful efforts to meet rapidly increasing electricity demand amid the postwar industrial revival. It is the first electric power company in Japan to receive recognition by the IEEE Milestone program. The dangerous and challenging construction work to build the Kuroyon Dam was portrayed in the famous Japanese film “Kurobe no Taiyo.”
Sharp Corporation received recognition for its contribution to the commercialization and industrialization of photovoltaic cells. The company started research of photovoltaic cells in 1959. After developing photovoltaic cells for use in satellites and lighthouses, the company started mass production of photovoltaic cells for residential use. The company had also received recognition by the IEEE Milestone program in 2005 for its pioneering contribution to the development of electronic calculators.
