KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CO. CUTTING CO2 EMISSIONS FURTHER
3/3/2010

Kippo News from Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Kansai International Airport Co. (KIAC) has kicked off an attempt to halve the operation time of auxiliary power units (APUs) to reduce the volume of CO2 emissions from aircraft. An auxiliary engine in the rear of the aircraft body, the APU is used to supply air conditioning to the aircraft and set off the main engine for flight while the aircraft is parked at an airport. Kansai International Airport (KIX) used to limit the time allowed for APU use to 30 minutes before an aircraft's departure, but recently cut the allowable duration to 15 minutes to tighten restrictions. While the APU is not in operation, electricity is supplied to aircraft via ground cables.

Major international airports in the world largely impose no limitations on APU use. In Japan, such international airports as Narita and Chubu (Centrair) limit APU use to 30 minutes. The 15-minute limit at KIX is thus the shortest in Japan and one of the shortest in the world. The cut of APU operation to 15 minutes results in reducing CO2 emission volume by 7,500 tons every year, equivalent to the annual discharge from 1,500 households, KIAC says.
