Kyogen is Japan's oldest form of spoken drama. It is closely associated with the Noh drama and was originally performed between the acts of a Noh play. But while Noh themes are mostly solemn, Kyogen presents a comical or satirical view of everyday situations, making it easy to enjoy. Originating from the Muramachi Period of the 14th century, the humorous stories in Kyogen Theater are derived from typical domestic quarrels and marital strife, and each story makes use of circus-like performances.
The Shigeyama family has been performing Kyogen for over 400 years. While preserving the authentic style of Kyogen, the Okura School energetically experiments with new types and styles of this ancient comedic theater. During their North American tour, with shows at the Smithsonian Freer Gallery in Washington, DC, and at the University of Chicago's International House, the Okura School will perform "Kaki Yamabushi" (The Permsimmon Thief), "Kusabira" (Mushrooms) and "Sanbaso" (Celebration of Fertility, Good Harvests, and the New Year).
This event is co-sponsored by the International House Global Voices Performing Arts Series, the Consulate General of Japan and the Japan Foundation, and the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago.
SAN FRANCISCO: "I am a man from this area" Theatre of Yugen House Warming
FREE
March 11 – 14, 2010
Thursday and Friday at 7pm
Saturday and Sunday at 2pm
"I am a man from this area."
Utilizing one of Kyogen's most distinguishing lines, Theatre of Yugen invites our neighbors and the San Francico community at large to come and celebrate the beginning of a new phase in our four decade long existence!
Theatre of Yugen has long opened it's doors to Japan's classical comedic form of Kyogen with colorful costumes, stylized vocal and physical movement, thereby bringing this culturally specific and surprisingly relevant 600 year old theatre form to life. With it's own special humor, Kyogen addresses such wordly concerns as greed, vanity and the pleasure of outwitting each other. servants get the best of their masters and wives get the upper hand over their husbands and the rituals of the Yamabushi (Mountain Priets) produce embarrasing and unexpected results!
The Friday evening performance will be our official house warming with a blessing. A sake toast will take place after each performance.
Program - 2 Kyogen comedies
Kaki Yamabushi (Persimmon Mountain Priest)
Busu (Sweet Poison)
