Message from the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan

Mr. Steve N. Iwamura
Chairman, American Chamber of Commerce in Japan-Kansai Branch

My message to foreign companies setting up business in Japan is: Do you have a compelling business reason to locate in Tokyo? If not, Kansai can be a great location for you and your company. Just as all American business is not in New York, all business in Japan is not in Tokyo. Kansai has a business environment that may be more suited to your company. Give yourself a chance and consider Kansai.

The Kansai economy, roughly equivalent to Canada's GNP awaits you. Centrally located in Japan, you can cover the rest of the Japanese market through a world-class transportation infrastructure that includes Kansai International Airport, Osaka Port and the bullet-train system. Door-to-door travel time is also shorter and more convenient within the region.

Kansai puts you in closer touch with the rest of Asia. Shorter international air flights and more importantly, you can take advantage of Kansai's special economic relationships with Asian economies. Did you know that nearly 50% of Kansai's international trade consists of trade with Asia? Kansai can be your springboard to Asian markets.

In Kansai, local governments and supporting agencies welcome you.You have the opportunity to stand out, instead of being lost in the crowd. You can ask for and receive various forms of support, assistance and cooperation. Introductions to potential business partners, customers, and other key relationships are possible.

From a work style and lifestyle point of view, Kansai offers a business-like but friendly business atmosphere. For lifestyle, Osaka offers medical facilities like Japan's National Cardiovascular Center, first-class international schools, lower-priced western style housing, concert and musical halls, jazz clubs like the Blue Note in Umeda plus more.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Kansai is active and growing. We welcome all foreign businesses and offer ourselves as a resource. I urge you to come down to Kansai, take a look and see for yourself. Contact the American Chamber for help in contacting the right people and then, make your own judgement.
